February is in full effect, and Subhan is back with our first interview of 2020! As we have tried to throughout the past year , our aim is to not only showcase the artists rising out of Ottawa but those who also play a pivotal role in shaping the emerging sounds out of the capital. This episode we were joined by an individual whose done just that, and is a dope artist in his own right , the homie LJ.

The LJ is founder & CEO of Cave Recording Studios & YV. The Cave represents one of the most frequented studios in the city, being the first spot a lot of artists ever recorded at. LJ details how from a young age he always had this passion for music being inspired by the likes of Rakim, Dr. Dre and J Dilla.

After certain circumstances in life that forced him to stay at home, he decided to convert his basement into a home studio and open his doors to the city. In turn offering services that were accessible to all walks of life to aspiring artists in Ottawa. This not only allowed LJ & the Cave team to master their own craft, but it gave hundreds of young artists in the city that space in which they could create freely without having to worry about the barriers of acquiring recording space and equipment. During our discussion we touch on the impact places like this can have on city's creative scene.

LJ being entrenched in the studio at all times is a prolific creator, consistently making music and refining his craft. His new project "Trap Gospel" is a testament to this, as this body of work was in the stash for almost 2 years. Fully produced by LukieBaby, the project is full of trap bangers and gritty lyrics designed to push you through that grind.

 

The standout single "Diamonds" is accompanied by a unique animated visual created by the talented 613rd. LJ details the collaborative process behind this one of a kind video and the importance of the visual representation of the city. A first for Ottawa, the animated joint depicts the city while LJ does the dash in a foreign , freezing everything in site with his ice . On top of all this we discuss the state of Ottawa's music scene, his origins, the "Pop" status of hip-hop, how to get the most out of a studio session and much more.
