This episode we had the privilege of chopping it up over the phone with one of the South's most unique R'n'b artists, the incredibly talented, Steffany Moneque. Originally from Alabama, Steffany grew up in household surrounded by music and was also a competitive dancer in her home state. From a young age, music was in her DNA leading to the moment where while attending the University of Alabama she was discovered by a major producer in the area from her voice memos that were floating around. The rest was history, as after this moment Steffany took the risk to fully pursue her passion and move to Atlanta with almost nothing.
We discuss the importance of taking risks to chase your dreams, and how this initial struggle shaped her into the person she is today. During this period was the moment when she realized the importance of networking and leaving an memorable impression wherever you go. We discuss how this comes from notions of self belief & self worth and how people won't bet on you if you don't bet on yourself.
Her latest project "Bedroom Sessions" is a prime example of this as the title not only refers to the sultry sonics of the EP, but the fact that Steffany recorded this all in her own bedroom!! After not being able to regularly access a studio, she came across a friend who was not in need of their recording equipment and decided to set up shop in her own room. The project itself is own of immersion and vulnerability , with spacey synths and emotive vocals each of the three tracks transport the listener to specific stages of love and lust allowing them to relate to Steffany on a whole other level.
We also talk about the value of not rushing into love, her dream Gucci Mane feature, pushing yourself to step outside your comfort zone, the cathartic nature of songwriting, the impact of wellness on one's art and much more. This was one of our fave conversations to date so be sure to listen to the full episode below !
